WHAT IS IT
BBQ Chicken, franchised by YKKO for Myanmar, is big in Korea. In fact, they are the top chicken restaurant there. Contrary to popular beliefs, BBQ Chicken is not a fast food restaurant. They offer, needless to say – chicken – cooked in a variety of ways. The other misnomer is the assumption that BBQ means barbeque, as one usually does. Truth is, BBQ is an abbreviation for Best of the Best Quality. Ahh.. We never would have guessed. They take pride in using 100% Olive Oil in their recipes and their dedication to feeding the hungry after hours; BBQ operates until 3am daily.
ATMOSPHERE
An upmarket casual dining restaurant, BBQ Chicken has an autumn colour scheme that complements the red leather booths. As all franchises do, the interior usually look pretty similar to one another. Their customers, mostly the more affluent locals, usually come in groups. There are private rooms available at the Central branch. Staff are friendly although not all of them speak English.
WHAT’S HOT
Their chicken, of course. It is quite an extensive menu – from salads to pastas, from char-broiled to grilled, from pizzas to burgers – one can be spoilt for choice. A plus point is using 100% olive oil. The recipes go through a stringent quality check from visiting Korean inspectors. Wifi is available so it’s not unusual to see customers spending a fair bit of time dining there.
WHAT’S NOT
The prices. A meal for a group of four can easily slim your wallet. They have taken measures recently to adjust their prices and have introduced membership cards and freebies to make it a sweeter deal.
RECOMMENDATION
The Korean Traditional Charbroiled is a chicken leg meat that had been marinated for 24 hours with a secret recipe. The meat is succulent and it retains the flavours of said secret recipe. The Golden Olive Chicken would probably remind one of the Crispy Chicken at KFC with the similar way in which they are battered and breaded. The difference is that these ones are fried in olive oil. They come out full-flavoured and not heavy on the batter. The other pleasant surprise is the Combination Pizza as we weren’t sure about how a Korean version of a pizza would be initially. They did not disappoint. It’s classic pizza with just vegetables and meat yet the consistency of the toppings and the pizza dough are just right.
