Sarkies Bar at The Strand Yangon is hosting entertaining new cocktail workshops with Italian mixologist Moretti Francesco.
“We merely drink cocktails for the sake of it. I want everyone to know what is going on behind the bar, and the creativity that the bartenders have to create them. It’s really fun too,” he said.
Myanmore recently attended one of the workshops, where Francesco gave a step-by-step guide while explaining the utensils and ingredients involved in making the cocktails. Us trainees made two glasses with his guidance, and then one glass without any supervision.
The concoctions included a sour cocktail and old fashioned cocktail. And then a blindfolded taste task got us guessing the ingredients and beverages. Francesco made the competition about the own creations of the attendees—judged by himself, and he showered his comments with compliments.
Francesco, who was born in Bitonto, has showcased his cocktails in 18 countries. Now he works amid a historic setting—Strand Hotel, built in 1901 and host to many a thirsty traveler, explorer and celebrity alike. The names of Noel Coward, Rudyard Kipling, and Orson Welles are worth a mention.
In honor of the Sarkies brothers, the original owners and founders of the hotel, Sarkies Bar was established. It offers the perfect environment to enjoy afternoon refreshments, sip on an evening sundowner or enjoy a cocktail before dinner, mindful of the rich heritage and history synonymous with this Yangon landmark.
The workshops are great fun and worth attending. They can be booked with for a minimum of eight and maximum of 16 people per group (US$30 per person) once a week. There is no workshop between 20 Feb and the beginning of March as Francesco will be in Bangkok for the Bar Awards. Bookings can be made via [email protected] .
