Myanmar’s national futsal team won a historic bronze medal in the ASEAN Futsal Championship after they defeated hosts Vietnam 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
It was a tense third-place play-off, which finished 2-2 after extra-time, as the White Angels claimed their third-ever medal in this competition.
Myanmar were beaten 8-3 by eventual winners Thailand in the semi-final and it looked as if they would finish the tournament empty handed when they went 2-0 down against Vietnam.
The hosts were two up inside 26 minutes but two quick goals from Kyaw Soe Moe and Nyein Min Soe levelled things up and took the match to extra time.
Both sides had their chances to win the game but neither team could find a winner so the match eventually had to be decided on penalties. Despite missing one of their spot kicks, Myanmar triumphed 4-3 in front of a 1500 capacity crowd in Ho Chi Minh.
The White Angels also secured a place in next year’s AFC Futsal Championship in Taiwan, where they will compete with 15 other nations from all over Asia.
