No.2, Aung Thukha Street, 9 Mile, Between Ocean Centre and A1, Mayangone Township, Yangon, Myanmar

Long-standing in Yangon’s food industry, Green Elephant remains popular for tourist groups. The restaurant offers a vast array of different dishes, and are a great introduction to Asian cuisine for those not willing to risk street food. The restaurant is pleasantly decorated; the servers are attentive and efficient. Highly recommended are their sweet desserts but bear in mind that the restaurant is quite expensive compared to many other Asian-style restaurants in Yangon.

141, Seik Kan Thar Street, 1st Floor, Lower Block, Between Mahar Bandoola and Merchant Street, Kyauktada Township, Yangon, Myanmar

This quaint little restaurant that sits on the first floor of a traditional Burmese building also doubles up as an art gallery. Serving Chinese and Burmese food, it’s run by a non-governmental volunteer group that helps street kids by giving them training in food and beverage. There’s a small table (it only seats two people) that sits on the balcony and it offers a great view of the bustling street life below. There are only half a dozen tables but the art on the walls make it an enjoyable place.

This local restaurant hidden in the small streets behind the City Hall serves some of the freshest and tastiest noodles and soups in town. The pork rib noodles are particularly delectable. The owner is very friendly and is always happy to give advice about local foods. An ideal cheap-food stop right in the heart of the downtown … but it closes early.

290 U Wisara Road, after the junction with Dhammazedi Road (up a narrow side street), Kamayut Township,Yangon,Myanmar.

Set in an attractive wooden colonial home, House of Memories is a one of a kind in Yangon. They dish out mostly Myanmar specialities but also have Thai, Chinese and Indian dishes. The main draw for many is that this was once the office of the country’s independence hero, Aung San, and upstairs, you will find a few artifacts from his time. Their balcony and garden are nice and breezy.

Aung Thukha is an excellent place to sample a range of Myanmar food: from rich, meaty curries to light, freshly made salads. The flavours are more subtle here than elsewhere, emphasising herbs rather than oil and spice. It is almost always busy, but manages to maintain a gentle, friendly service and a palpable old-school atmosphere, making the experience akin to eating at someone’s home.
