Myanmar has cuisines more diverse than its ethnic groups. Its favourite dish Mohinga has at least a dozen variations based on the fish and thickness of the broth. Some towns have their own native food that is nothing like any other ethnic cuisines. If you want to delve into Myanmar’s colourful food cultures, these places are a good start.

Mu Ai Kachin food restaurant is hidden away on a small side street just off Hledan Road opposite the Hledan Center. The restaurant is simple, immaculately clean, pleasantly cool and surprisingly small. Each of the six tables is decorated with a bamboo vase of freshly cut flowers—it’s a nice touch, and one that alludes to the attention to detail and efforts this little restaurant puts into its offering.

Originated from Kayin State “Naw Tayar” represents the concept of what are the Karen authentic foods like. The comers can experience the Karen’s most famous dish “Tar Lapaw”, at there. And take note that Karen traditional dishes are made by their own recipes and  their dishes are both less sweetened and oily.

A popular spot in the trendy Yaw Min Gyi quarter, Aung Mingalar offers a terrific mix of Shan and local dishes. Also highly recommended are the fried dumplings. It is a pleasant venue with open doors that gets a cool breeze. A great restaurant for people watching that attracts foreigners and locals alike.
