A city perched on the edge of land, a harbor filled with tar stained boats reminiscent of another era. Small narrow boats weave in between massive vessels packed with grizzled fisherman. You can see small groups of foreigners abroad, occasionally.

“Kawthaung has a five star hotel, [Myeik] only have a four star hotel, but give us more time, it’s only been a year”, says Aung Aung, one of the Managers at Life Seeing Tours
Tourism in Myeik is an infant industry for many reasons, getting there being one of them. The bus ride takes over 18 hours from Yangon, past Dawei the pavement begins to dwindle, the drive a bit bumpier. Most visitors fly into the tiny airport, their trip already mapped out.

‘Permission’ is the ire of every tour company in the city. Without it, you see less of the Mergui Archipelago, getting it is difficult and lengthy. The laws have loosened since 2014, but the level of bureaucracy is still high especially if you want to spend as much time on the boat as possible.

Multiple Day Excursions
Untouched reefs and empty sea passages make it a highly coveted spot for veteran scuba divers. Of course, many are fine seeing the surface of the Archipelago with the occasional stop for snorkeling, the amount of marine life you see is still astounding. Manta rays are unusually common sightings.

But multiple scuba adventures and two day excursions require permission from the government. It’s essentially a visa process which is several more times rigorous than you moving into the country. If you’re planning on spending several nights on a boat, in particular if you want to scuba dive, your trip should be booked a month in advance. Copies of your passport must receive the glance of three different Ministries, not including local authorities, if you want to avoid trips back and forth to Myeik.

Last Minute Bookings

‘Blissful Myanmar’ seems to be the leading tour service in town. Hotels often book their guests through this agency which is run by a local entrepreneur and a young staff with solid English skills. If you haven’t booked your trip before you arrive, just walk into their office which is near the port. One day trips can be scheduled at the last minute, but don’t wait, boats fill up quickly.

To be safe, one-day trips should be scheduled at least 3 days in advance. Check out Life Seeing Tours for the complete list of destinations.

Things to Know
No matter what you decide to do first, a forty-minute ride into the Andaman Sea will be the precursor, the skyline of Myeik well out of sight. A few things you should know…
You will spend time on a beach, none of which is close to Myeik. Every tour of the islands includes at least one stop at a beach, the closest one is almost two hours away by fishing boat, 90 minutes by speed boat. The islands are hardly tropical in aesthetic, the thick of trees look borderline deciduous from the boat. Strips of sandy beach stand out from the mostly rocky and unreachable coastline.

Large-scale trade has yet to reach the islands. The biggest vessels you’ll see away from the harbor are fishing boats with ten foot poles jetting out, each lined with antique light bulbs. The steam-punk look is apparently a devastatingly effective way to attract fish at night.
The tide is eerily erratic. In the morning, the water is high, and the boats are quick. If you dock to eat lunch at noon, you may return to find a beached boat. The tide dictates every trip. Excursions in small coves and in mangrove forests must be scheduled in the beginning, open water sights are reserved for the second half.

Smuggling is common and largely accepted. Most boats you pass will be of fisherman. Others, as your guide may point out, are smugglers. There are whole families who take part in illegally shipping wood and other natural resources into Thailand. As destructive as the trade may be, the people tend to be unusually friendly when encountering tour groups.
Most Moken People are at sea, not part of the tour. The indigenous group of fisherman, commonly known as Sea Gypsies, are only in the villages during rainy season. There are one-day trips that go to Dome Island, a Moken village about two hours from Myeik, but tourists will most-likely only see the children and elders left behind during their two month long fishing trips. These folks are open to chat, but understandably, do not wish to be a spectacle. Expect to spend less than an hour walking around the Moken villages.

The Kayak Trip is an incredible experience but egregiously misnamed. Tour companies will offer a one-day Kayak Trip, but less than a third of the outing is spent on a kayak. To be fair, the tour is rather eclectic and thus hard to label. You first hop into kayaks and explore a Mangrove forest. Then you slowly paddle your way into a fishing village where you eat lunch. From there, you take the motor boat to a secluded beach another hour away.

What To Do In Myeik
The city of Myeik itself is pretty and diverse. Tattered colonial walls, neighbor new art deco condominiums, which sit caddy corner to red wooden barns of Chinese architecture. This can all be enjoyed within three hours or less.

Dinner Spot: Shwe Yar Su. Foreigners and locals alike will tell you that this open-air restaurant is the best restaurant in town. The seafood menu is a complete and delicious mix of Thai and Burmese, the snails are a must-try. Escargot without the butter and needless presentation, also highly addictive.

The energy of the Taunggyi Balloon Festival is similar to what is elicited in April’s Thingyan Water Festival.  Except instead of water, the balloon festival has fire.

“Absolutely mad, only way to describe it. Fireworks going off into crowds. Almost everyone was drinking, many speaking odd tribal languages. Just mad”, says Charlie Artingstoll, a British expat who attended last year.

The balloon festival is part of Tazaungdaing, the buddhist full moon also known as the light festival, which celebrates the end of monsoon season. Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State, a region of several ethnic groups and languages, many of whom are represented at the event.

Corporate sponsorships line the edges of the festival now, from mobile phones to energy drinks, yet this festival has retained much of its traditional charm.

Daytime Taunggyi is quieter, but still busy. You can sit on the lawn and watch massive shapes inflate into various animals or a fantastically decorated hot-air balloon.

The fire mentioned earlier can be seen at night, follow the sound of deafening music if you can’t find the venue. There were no reported deaths last year, an improvement from 2014 which had two. But those attending this year should still be careful, especially around the balloons with fireworks in them. Accidents tend to come from large piles of fireworks weighing down the balloon from reaching a safe distance from the ground… Or if they hit the gas-filled ballon itself.

Joining the Festival

It will be nearly impossible to find a bus for the remaining days of the festival. If you’re keen, you should think about finding a bus to Kalaw. Alternatively you could fly into Heho airport which is an hour taxi ride away.

map-1_fotor

Lodging will be the main issue. More expats join every year, making accommodation sparse. It is illegal for foreigners to lodge outside of a hotel, this is especially enforced in the countryside.

map-2_fotor

Last minute lodging may be near impossible to find in Taunggyi but you can find places to stay in Nyaung Shwe which is about a 40,000 Ks cab ride away. Kalaw will be a bit more than that.

map-3_fotor

The festival technically began on the 6th of November. But most folks come right before the weekend. Here is the schedule for the event according to MyanmarTravelBlog.

Similar to Thingyan, the final days are considered the most wild… something to consider depending on what type of traveller you are!

The iconic American fried chicken chain now has three locations in Myanmar, with others to come as soon as more modern developments are built to house them. Indeed KFC is presenting itself as something clean, refreshing and new- that includes their food.

For the first time, KFC Myanmar is mirroring its US counterparts by rolling out Limited Time Offers (LTO) in their menu. These new, limited options will stick around for longer depending on how well they sell.

Chili & Lime Chicken. The first LTO in Myanmar, offer ends in October. Lightly battered fried chicken rubbed with mild chili powder and lime juice, you can distinctly taste both flavours. Two pieces, fries and a drink goes for around 3,900 Ks.

kfc-chili-lime
People are thrilled about Chili Lime Chicken!

The Chili Lime recipe is not unique to Myanmar, something similar has been offered throughout Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, the Chili Lime concept was known as the New York Chili Lime 30s. It is unclear how well it has sold in Myanmar but there’s definitely enough online advertising to make the public aware of the LTOs. Much comes from Facebook, naturally.

It’ll be interesting to see what other LTOs KFC Myanmar comes up with. Let the speculation begin.

From mountains of Kalaw to the lowlands of Nyaung Shwe, travellers usually spend a few days on either side of the famous Shan state trek. Tired tourists at end of the journey usually tour Inle Lake, maybe cycle to the edge of town. If you’re looking to do something a bit different, the Bamboo Delight Cooking Class is highly recommended.

The owner of Bamboo Delight, goes by Sue, runs the classes outside of her home. She started the venture with the encouragement of a German tourist couple who she met while in the hospitality industry. Her father taught her to be kind and open to foreigners, now she teaches hundreds of them every year. Sue’s english skills, original recipes and noticeable passion all contributed to a climbing buzz about Bamboo Delight cooking school. Eventually, it earned a TripAdvisor recommendation.

Lemongrass Chicken Curry!

You don’t really make Inle cuisine at Bamboo Delight, Sue admits the menu is more of a mix between Shan, Thai and Burmese. For example, the Fish Dumplings are steamed in Banana leaves, which is seemingly Shan. The Lemongrass Chicken Curry tastes closer to Thai. The Bean and Tea leaf Salad is a clear connect to  Burmese. So the theme of the food is a bit scattered, but all equally delicious and fresh.

One person can cook one appetizer and one entree. The choices change depending on the season, but you can expect dumplings and Lemongrass Chicken Curry to be constant staples.

Sue, her husband and another staff member will walk you through each step. The hardest part is remembering all of the spices. All of the ingredients are local, except for the coconut milk.

The owner is a truly amazing woman who has overcome considerable odds to get to the place she is today. Once the cooking is over, she will most likely hand you a copy of her life-story which is roughly 8 pages long. It may sound like a presumptuous gesture, but the raw spirit of this aspiring cook makes the narrative a compelling and emotional read.

Think about setting aside 2-3 hours for Bamboo Delight at the end for your upcoming Shan State trek. It’s only 20,000 Ks a person. If you call ahead, you can help pick out the ingredients at the local market! A portion of your money goes to funding the local elementary school, the rest goes to an amazing family dedicated to helping the town of Nyaung Shwe.

If you’re visiting Myanmar, perhaps even moving here, there are a few rules that you should be on your radar. Expats know these quirky laws well and are a resource in navigating between the permissible and the forbidden.

US Dollars Must Be Perfect

Designed by Freepik

Well-documented, always worth mentioning. US currency is trusted over the tumultuous Myanmar kyat, as long as the notes are crisp and clean. Crisp and Clean. A smudge on Benjamin Franklin’s likeness could easily result in a less favorable exchange rate. A creased or wrinkled bill could lead to worthless money, seriously. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand why, US dollars must be in mint condition.

Carrying dollars in your pants pocket is not the same thing as burning it, after all Thailand bankers will happily accept your used notes, but it’s still a horrible idea. A hardcover book as a wallet will do the trick.

No Motorbikes in Yangon

motorbike_freepik_shahsoft1

The roads of Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, even Mandalay may be filled with schools of motorbikes, not Yangon. Motorbikes are illegal in most of Yangon, riders can be seen on the outskirts of town in areas like Mingalar and Hlaing Thar Yar townships.

Rumors swirl over why motorbikes are banned in Yangon. Is it policy aimed at increasing public safety, or an arbitrary rule left over from the previous government? Either way, the law has worked, motorbikes have been driven to extinction in the city centre.

Electric scooters and electric bicycles, however, occupy a grey zone in the law. You will occasionally see one quietly zip down a side street. Is it legal? They seem to drive by Yangon police without issue but the riders tend to be foreigners who are always treated differently, for better or for worse.

Foreigners Can Not Lodge At Private Residences (Especially Outside Yangon)

shan village1

This law is hardly enforced in Yangon where expats make up a substantial chunk of the rental market. Outside of the city, foreigners should plan on staying in hotels or hostels. Rural areas with no hotel options are exempt from the law, allowing tourists to stay with local families, even a few monasteries.

If a foreigner stays at a private residence, it won’t be the traveler who will be in trouble, but the Myanmar local who provided the lodging.

Foreigners Can Not Own Property or Sign Leases Over One-Year

Land_Property_commons

Have you ever thought about purchasing a few acres of land in Shan State? It doesn’t matter how rich you are, foreigners are banned from having property under their name. These restrictions hardly matter for people in Myanmar temporarily, but are vital for those interested in starting a business.

All expat-operated enterprises rent their space from a landlord of Myanmar citizenship. Not only that, but foreigners are not allowed to sign a lease more than one year, which can be problematic where the price of land is only going up. As a result, the relationship between landlord and foreigner business owner is paramount.

Rent Must Be Paid Upfront, For The Entire Lease

Keys_Rent_Lease_Flat_publicdomainpictures

If you’re planning on renting a flat in Myanmar, you must be prepared to pay a lot of cash on day one. Landlords typically allow for either a 6-month lease or a 1-year lease, either way, the entire amount must be paid in a lump sum before the move-in date. If your rent is USD $400 a month, on a 1-year lease, you will need to cough up $4,800 to secure the flat. This does not include any deposit or utilities.

Try to negotiate everything before you hand over the money. After all, you won’t have the threat of withholding your rent. Renters commonly ask for a bed to be included, or a new fridge before agreeing upon a lease. Landlords will sometimes help out with repairs, but don’t hold your breath. You may have to hire a local handyman on your own dime for small repairs around the flat.

Alcohol Bans Do Not Apply For Hotels

alcoholbottles

They’re called curfews, but more accurately, they’re alcohol bans. Occasionally the government will impose a ban on the sale of alcohol after 9pm during school exams or times of perceived threats. Sometimes the reason is never fully understood.

Hotels have been exempt from these alcohol bans in the past, at least in Yangon. If your visit to Myanmar coincides with an early last call, there’s no need to fret, your hotel bar should still be open.

Do Not Mock Buddhism

Shwedagon Night_Hongsar Wadee

Don’t. Not even as a homage. If it makes light of the religion, it is punishable under the law. Foreigners are not exempt.

The Burma Penal Code outlaws insulting any religion or religious class, but with Buddhism being the dominant faith in the country, perceived offenses to Buddha are particularly enforced.
