Myanmar Deitta is a not-for-profit civil society organisation committed to developing the resources for documentary photography, filmmaking and multimedia production in Myanmar. We work to develop training opportunities and workshop programs, host photographic exhibitions and screenings of documentary film and multimedia, and provide support for independent documentary projects.
Since political reforms began to sweep through Myanmar towards the end of 2011 the country’s independent media has experienced a period of unprecedented change. The transition from draconian control to free press may still be in its infancy, but the simple fact that there now exists a recognisable independent media sector operating within the country is in itself a mark of real change.
In-depth documentary work is an essential element of an independent media, able to contextualise issues and assess their impact over extended periods of time in a way that news media cannot, as well as act as a platform for the presentation and discussion of social issues which are often overlooked by the restrictively tight remit of what we consider ‘news’. Myanmar’s emergence from decades of isolation has made it not only one of the most exciting places for documentary work, but also one of the most essential. However, in order to ensure that creative, independent documentary work thrives it needs creative, independent support.

Welcome to Myanm/art – gallery, reading room, and exhibition space located in Yangon, Myanmar. We represent artists from all over Myanmar, both young and emerging, and work to raise awareness of their ongoing creative projects, both locally and internationally.
Our experience in Myanmar over the past six years tells us one thing – there is a hell of a lot of talent, underexposed and undervalued – here in Myanmar. With all the rapid change, artists are working hard to contribute to a country in transition. We want to help these artists build their reputations, gain exposure abroad, and have access to an updated library of archival and contemporary resources. So we combined a reading room with hundreds of books and resources, adjoined to an exhibition space free to use for artists. We also work with a selection of artists we believe to be paving the way for future generations of artists, not only in country, but all over Asia and the world.
Myanm/art was originally founded as a platform to aid and contribute to the growing archive of contemporary arts in Myanmar and therefore, the larger map of Southeast Asia. It existed as an exercise of scholarship and archive, of review and editorial. One of the results of the work of Myanmart was MARCA – Myanmar Art Resource Center and Archive, an online and physical resource serving the artistic and creative community in Yangon, with pop-ups in Mandalay and Taungyi. MARCA was part of the Mobile Library program orginially founded by Asia Art Archive, and was the 3rd country host ever to over 400 books on contemporary Asian art. Learn more about MARCA’s ongoing activities here.

Not far from the junction with University Road, a sinuous, narrow street opens from the always-busy Inya Road. It is said to lead to one of the oldest galleries in Yangon, the Inya Gallery of Art. Once you’ve finally found the street, also known as Inya Road, however strong you are in maths, it will still remain a challenge to orient among the house numbers as they don’t really follow the usual ‘increasing’ scheme but provide a colorful game of letters and randomly disposed gates. After perhaps the third curve, the familiar name eventually arises and invites the visitor to enter a timeless space strictly dedicated to contemporary art.
The Inya Gallery of Art, is still today, quite an unconventional place amongst other galleries. Surrounded by tall trees, a garden opens up after a long path leading to a studio-like space: next to it a hall containing paintings, from recent to previous periods. The roots of the Gallery go back to the very end of the 80s. After an era of more than two decades during which the exhibitions on the Myanmar art scene were regulated by central committees and art councils, came a chapter in history where exhibitions were even less allowed after the events of ‘88.
The Yangon Gallery is an art center with sophisticated styling available to provide space for events such as art exhibition, photography exhibition, book launching, workshops, seminars and more. Between exhibitions and events, the gallery displays its collection of contemporary art and photography.
The Yangon Gallery is situated in People’s Park Compound, the quintessential location in the heart of Yangon, near the prominent Shwe Dagon pagoda.
