Harmoneat is an innovative social enterprise dedicated to bringing diverse communities together through food.

Our vision is a world that is united by commonalities rather than divided by difference.

We use food to run a number of innovative community projects – women’s cooking circles, skills training, peace education and community building – using food as a way to tackle bigger social issues.

We have piloted community projects in Yangon, Myanmar and are now exploring opportunities to work with partners in other locations including from our home in Australia. In 2014/15, Harmoneat ran a highly successful social enterprise based in Yangon, Myanmar – a Burmese cooking school which used funding from tourist cooking classes to run innovative peacebuilding initiatives with diverse communities.

Dagon Centre I, a 3 storey Shopping Mall first opened its doors in 2004, one of the first of its kind in Myanmar. A modest start as compare to other neighboring countries but a big leap in the Shopping business in Yangon, where most people still do their shopping in places like Bogyoke Market. With its strategic location, it has soon became a hot spot for Young shoppers and a good Family weekend place. Soon afterwards, more similar shopping mall started coming in but Dagon Centre remains to be one of the top, for it is strategically located in the highly dense middle income family residential area. The other advantage Dagon Centre I has is, its good functional layout with better decoration and wider walkways. With the high success and popularity of Dagon Centre Shopping Mall, Dagon International Ltd. decided to put up more shopping malls in the near vicinity. Dagon International jointly developed with Ministry of Information’s owned land next door to the existing Dagon Centre I to become our second mall in the Group. The Project was named Dagon Centre II and which was jointly developed with the agreement of 60:40 benefit sharing between Dagon Group and Ministry of Information, Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise. 40% of the project cost was contributed by Ministry of Information with their owned land and other 60% of the project cost was contributed by Dagon Group.

Dagon Centre II is a 16 storey building with 6 storeys Shopping Centre including Children’s Playground and Cinema Hall. The Grand Opening was on January 2012. With the fast evolving taste of Myanmar Market we strive hard to offer our Customers better shopping choices with a better ambience. It is a good place to hang out with friends and an all-in-one stop for the Family. Dagon Centre II was designed and constructed with features which can be comparing to other Malls in the neighboring countries. Being one of the Leaders in the Industry, we Dagon believe that, we owe it to our Customers to continue to grow and should keep pace to the fast development in our country. Although, Dagon Centre II had just opened its doors, our team is already busy finalizing the plans for a bigger and more modern Dagon Centre III. A bigger Department Store offering a wide array of Local and Imported Products, and more shops for a better Shopping Experience.

Yangon’s most popular cinema screens a lot of foreign movies and sometimes hosts international film festivals. Its 1970s chic, and has 3D offerings and very cool aircon. The local popcorn is worth a try, sweet not salty. It has a great architectural façade, that is very funky.

Yoyamay is an ethnographic textile gallery founded by U Kyin Lam Mang (aka Pa Mang) and Daw Khun Shwe (aka Nu Shwe). They’ve been in the textile industry over a decade, collecting old textiles as well as creating contemporary traditional textiles. They started the business with the sole intention of gaining profits. However, after an appreciation for the traditional textiles was fostered, they decided to keep some of the textiles as their collection and sell the rest to those who have the same passion about textiles as they do.
Even in producing contemporary textiles as well, they came to realize that a substantial amount of weavers mostly women depend their lives on weaving textiles. Thus, they could not send back the textiles that they sent to them from Chin State just because the textiles are not in standard quality. For the weavers, it’s at least 30 to 50 hours of work. So, they started to buy every textile that the weavers made; some of them have been sold out but some of them are still in the inventory. Finally, they creatively came up with an idea of using good parts of some of the textiles which have been sitting in the inventory for a long time to make card holders, bags and cushion covers. The remaining parts of those textiles which are of low quality, however, are discarded. Moreover, since demands for bags and cushion covers have risen dramtically, they gave their younger daughter, Cing Chan Sang (Julie) to lead that branch of production. She’s now working on producing high-end bags and cushion covers with the guidance of some designers and those products are now available in Yoyamay gallery.
