Yangon Bids Farewell to the Odd/Even Driving Rule

We’ve all been there over the last few months. You’ve got your keys in hand, your sunglasses on, and a spontaneous craving for an iced Americano downtown. But then, the dreaded morning panic sets in: Wait, is today an odd or even day? Can I actually drive my car today?

Well, Yangonites, it is time to breathe a collective sigh of relief. As of this week, the daily license plate juggling act is officially a thing of the past!

The Green Light is Back On

If you’ve been relying on ride-hailing apps or carpooling with your neighbor on your “off” days, you can finally reclaim your steering wheel. On September 9, 2026, the President’s Office announced the official revocation of the odd/even vehicle driving system.

Originally introduced back on March 7, 2026, to help manage the nationwide fuel shortages, the rule definitely changed the rhythm of our city. But now, whether your license plate ends in a 1 or an 8, the streets are yours to cruise any day of the week.

The Fine Print: Don’t Toss That Calendar Just Yet!

Before you rev your engine and completely forget about the odd/even system, there is a very important catch you need to know.

While you are free to drive whenever you want, the odd/even system for purchasing fuel is still very much in effect. This means you still need to plan your trips to the petrol station based on your license plate number. So, keep a close eye on your fuel gauge before setting off on a long journey, and time your pit stops accordingly!

Weekend Getaways, Unlocked

Why does this matter right now? Because spontaneity is back on the menu!

No more stressing over which car you need to take for a quick overnight trip to Bago, or calculating if your Friday drive down to the beaches of Chaung Tha or Ngwe Saung means you’ll be stranded by a driving ban on Sunday. You can finally plan your road trips around your actual schedule, rather than your vehicle registration.

Whether it’s a late-night drive to grab a bowl of Mohinga, or a weekend escape out of the city limits, it’s time to rediscover the simple joy of an open road.

Buckle up, turn up your favorite driving playlist, and enjoy the ride. We’ll see you out there—no plate checking required!
