Is heritage something we simply freeze in time and display behind glass, or does it thrive best when integrated into our daily lives with fresh meaning? If you ask the team at Turquoise Mountain Myanmar, the answer is clear: tradition is at its best when it’s alive, breathing, and connecting communities.
This October, a vibrant new spot is joining Yangon’s cultural roadmap. Turquoise Mountain Myanmar is officially opening the doors to its new Cultural Centre in Bahan Township—a dynamic venue designed to bring together craft, creativity, design, and community under one roof.
To kick off this exciting new chapter, the center is launching with “Heritage In Her,” a powerful collaborative exhibition organized with Kalasa Art Space.
What to Expect: Art, Textiles, and Modern Memory
The debut exhibition, Heritage In Her, stems from a quiet yet profound thought: “There is something quietly powerful about a Myanmar woman dressed in Acheik.”
The show seamlessly pairs Artist Aung Ko’s iconic Royal Women Series with the intricate, enduring tradition of Luntaya Acheik weaving. Through a breathtaking mix of fine art and traditional textiles, the exhibition explores the deep intersection of womanhood, personal identity, and cultural memory.
It’s an intimate look at three distinct threads:
- The woman who wears it with pride and elegance today.
- The woman who crafts it, preserving centuries-old techniques thread by thread.
- The shared heritage passed down across generations.
Beyond this opening show, the Cultural Centre is set to become a lively hub for everyone—from long-time Yangon residents and art lovers to curious newcomers. Expect a ongoing lineup of hands-on workshops, artist talks, cultural events, and spaces to meet the creators shaping contemporary Myanmar design.
The Vibe & Atmosphere
Nestled along Phoe Sein Road in Bahan, the new Cultural Centre feels less like a quiet museum and more like a welcoming creative sanctuary. It’s built to foster genuine human connection—a place where you can discover traditional techniques, exchange new perspectives with artists, or simply take in inspiring aesthetics with friends on a quiet afternoon.
Why Go?
Opening events like this don’t happen every day! Being present for the launch of a brand-new cultural landmark gives you an insider’s seat to Yangon’s evolving art scene. Whether you are looking to deepen your appreciation for traditional Myanmar crafts or just want an inspiring weekend outing, this exhibition offers a fresh look at how local heritage continues to inspire modern fashion and art.
