Outside the Sule, Shwedagon Pagoda’s a new world is being rediscovered that offers a different travel experience around Yangon. It’s time to re-explore holidays near home with Daycations and Staycations.

“Demand for Staycations and Daycations, or day trips, has risen in periods where there are no lockdowns. We expect as we move beyond Covid-19 that growth will be exponential. What people seem to desire is an exciting adventure, but one that’s Covid safe,” said Sammy Samuels, Myanmar Shalom Travel.

“We know that it’s going to be a multistep program to open up travel, and it maybe two steps forward, one step back as the government responds to virus numbers. Today we tour Twante, tomorrow we may be touring our apartments, we just don’t know.”

Tiptoeing back to providing normal services are a few hotels and travel agencies. Last Saturday Uncharted Horizons held their first tour since August, a cycle adventure to the river island.

“In January we were booked out with overseas travelers,” said Jochen Meissner, Uncharted Horizons. “Now, if there is no lockdown, we’re flat-out with tours for locals, even in the rainy season.”

Daycations:

Henry’s Village Home is one of Samuels’ favorite escapes and it’s only 9 miles north of Yangon near Nga Su Taung, Hlegu Township.

In Henry’s kitchen villagers guide you through preparing a traditional Mon dinner and for the complete risk takers there’s a basket making course.

After lunch take a leisurely trek out from the village before heading home.

Seven Hidden Treasures: is a Yangon based tour to wonderful destinations organized by Samuels. History has buried many of Yangon’s greatest icons. Now they’re being rediscovered as part of this historical and architecture tour.

Seikkyi Kanaungto: This tiny village west of Dala is one of Uncharted Horizons adventure travels. Explore the bamboo villages by bike or rickshaw and meet the locals who have called this home for generations.

Other tours include exploring the Irrawaddy delta weaving through rice paddies. Here you’ll enjoy learning from villagers and bask in the culture of this amazing country.

Myanmar Walks: Downtown walking tours are always popular and Myanmar Walks have created three extraordinary options. ‘The Bombay Tour’ explains the history of the Indian community in Yangon, particularly under colonial rule. The tour includes exploring one of the most treasured buildings; the Bengali Sunni Jameh Masjid Mosque. ‘Beyond the Kon Baung Dynasty’ explores the history of Yangon since the last monarch of 1885.

While organized tours have been halted under lockdown, private tours may be possible, depending on the Government rules.
