A very popular brand in Singapore, Uncle Tetsu has several shops in Yangon satisfying Myanmar’s crave for its famous Japanese Cheesecake.

You might wonder what a Japanese Cheesecake is? In contrast to the American version it is a type of sponge cake with less sweet flavor and fewer calories, containing less cheese and sugar. The cake is made with cream cheese, butter, sugar, whipped cream and eggs.

The concept originated in Hakata, Japan in 1947 as a Soufflé Cheesecake but is more widely known as Japanese Cheesecake or Japanese Cotton Cheesecake outside of Japan. 

Uncle Tetsu himself, or Tetsushi Mizokami, was born and raised in Fukuoka, Hakata, Japan, where he learned how to bake from a very young age by helping his parents at their cake shop as a way to spend more time with them.

So how does it taste? 

We did a tasting of three types – Original, Cheese  Chiffon, and Chocolate. The Myanmar reviewer loved the original, its fluffiness and light texture with balanced sweetness. 

The European reviewer on the other hand felt it resembled a sponge cake too much and would have preferred a standard more condense cheesecake. However, compared to a normal sponge cake the added cheese flavor gives it an advantage and makes it more tasty. Works great with a cup of green tea for a better taste bud.

The Cheese Chiffon is more bread-like and doesn’t have the same fluffiness and is more dry. Supposed to have cheese slices inside and works better with coffee than the original one. 

The Chocolate was on the other hand a winner for both parties. Nice chocolate taste and fluffiness makes you lick your fingers and grab one more.

Original goes for 8,500, Chiffon 5,000 and Chocolate 9,000 Ks. A whole cake works well for 4 people.
