Yangon is bubbling with new and exciting concepts. Launched during the lockdown, Couscous Kitchen is the first restaurant to offer traditional couscous available for delivery in Yangon, a North African dish made of semolina served with spiced meat or vegetable stew.
Couscous itself is a North African dish made from tiny steamed balls of semolina flour. Though we think of it as a grain, couscous is actually a type of pasta and a healthy alternative to white or brown rice. It has fewer calories and carbohydrates than both brown and white rice, and there is more fiber in couscous than there is in white rice.
Couscous Kitchen was started as one of the many cloud kitchen concepts launched by the team behind Penthouse and Pegaz Solutions, and the idea was to bring this home-cooked meal to everyone wishing to explore the tastes and flavors of the most famous North African dish.
We ordered it for takeaway through their Facebook page. The menu is simple and straightforward, decide what meat or order them all or just keep it vegetarian. We went for the Royal Couscous that comes with three types of meat – a chicken leg, merguez sausage, and braised meat slightly spiced up with Tunisia harissa. You need to order in advance so they have time to prepare it which stopped me from impulse ordering a few times. Delivery is available, even to Star City for free on Sunday afternoons.
It comes in a nice paper packaging, with the braised meat stew in a separate container which you later pour over the dish to let it be soaked up by the semolina. It is beautifully prepared in the container but when you move it to your plate it takes a bit of an effort to make it look as nice so don’t judge it by the photo!
It comes with a variety of seasonal vegetables and the first thought that comes to mind to describe it is a big nice home-cooked meal. What strikes you is the quality of the food and its flavors. It comes at a bit high price of 21,000 kyats but the portion size and quality of the dish make up for it and buying it again is a no-brainer.
What makes it special
A great home-cooked style dish with a lot of flavors and premium quality to share with family and friends, or to enjoy by yourself.
