Omnivore by Sharky’s: An Oasis of Steak and Wine

With its slogan “local, artisan, organic” and the taste to match, Sharky’s is undoubtedly a finest eatery to fulfil your taste buds with their first-class steak, freshly baked bread and delicious ice-cream for over two and a half decades.

Sharky’s Pansodan outlet located at the bustling heart of Yangon, has just been rebranded with a new identity — partnered with Htoo Maung of Marbled Black Co. for meat and Lu Win from Asia Wine Network for wine — giving birth to a new born baby of Sharky’s with its ethos still remained, and it is called Omnivore by Sharky’s.

My friends and I visited Omnivore on a Sunday afternoon, shortly before 4 pm to avoid the crowd. Right off the bat, we noticed huge wine racks covering the entire right side of the brick-walled chamber, creating a classy atmosphere, with orange lights falling on picnic wooden tables.

We found a table near the wall and there was only one other guest in the restaurant, relaxing with a book in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. A smiling waitress came to us with the menus in her arms and poured cold water into our glasses.

I already knew what I wanted – Flank Steak, the biggest piece of the cheapest cut they had. I was hungry and wanted to go for quantity at the slight expense of quality. My friends, who already had lunch, went for a Roasted Chicken Sandwich and a simple Chicken Burger. For starters, we ordered a loaf of sourdough bread and butter.

Within ten minutes, the bread arrived — fresh and tasty. If I had a complaint, it would be the cold and hard butter, but the bread itself was warm, soft and crusty at the right places and absolutely delicious with a dab of olive oil and a sprinkle of Fleur de Sel and pepper on it.

The steak and sandwiches came shortly after, accompanied by giant fries and two types of sauces, one a sweet and barbeque-smelling ketchup and the other light and pleasant butter sauce.

My steak was pre-cut in medium bite-sizes and garnished with rosemary and flakes of salt. While I saw my friends enjoying their sandwiches, they were spying on my steak with hints of envy and regret, as I enjoyed it with audible appreciation. I didn’t really care for the sauce and I didn’t need to. My medium rare steak looked not only mouth-watering, it was also tender, juicy and delightful. 

I could have, probably should have, stopped there, but, somehow, I managed to find room for a scoop of coconut ice-cream for dessert, having decided against the very appealing bottles of wine on the racks. I had, quite literally, too much on my plates.

I left the restaurant with a full belly and a lighter wallet, but with a huge grin on my face. I would be coming back soon.
