While lockdown strands us from our favourite restaurants during the coronavirus pandemic, the thrill of ordering food online is a great distraction, an alternative to home cooking.
Using the Yangon Door2Door app, we ordered from Edge Indian Restaurant, which has an extensive menu of north Indian dishes and some from south India.
Compensation for a long wait for delivery was as the meal moved through the corridor it left behind a mouth-watering aroma.
In a vegetarian and meat loving home, few restaurants can cater for everyone’s needs. The Edge does, with an extensive menu for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
Vegetarian Option: Palak Paneer (Indian cottage cheese), cooked with puréed spinach, flavoured with garlic, ginger and garam masala. The first mouthful provides a strong taste of spinach and garlic in a smooth sauce; by the end of the meal you still wanted more.
Garlic naan straight from the oven is divine but doesn’t survive time well. Delivered cold the microwave releases any moisture, leaving a hard, tasteless bread that takes away from the main meal.
Meat Lovers Corner: For the non-vegetarian, Mutton Rogan Josh, a classic north Indian dish that comes from the cuisine of Kashmir. The pieces of braised mutton were soft to the bite, with a medium hot curry sauce that had a taste of chilli and a rich blend of spices. Just right for a person who avoids the menu dishes marked with 3 chilli.
The 950,000 strong Indian community, most of whom migrated to Myanmar during colonization brought the most divine food.
Throughout Yangon Indian restaurants blossom and none are the same, both for taste and for price.
Edge Indian Restaurant (Vedge Indian Restaurant on some maps) is a comfortable restaurant near Sule Pagoda.
Delivery Time: Order 13.15. Delivered: 14.45.
Recycled Packaging: No effort made; polystyrene, plastic, aluminium foil.
Price: 28,150 Kyats (at the high end for 2 people).
Issues: During delivery the bike’s backpack seemed to have upended, with the meat dish sauce leaking into the rice and naan, leaving amble opportunity for vegetarians to complain.
But what can you do, it’s home delivery to spare you from another home cooked meal!
