Nyan Htet Naing, a 20-year-old bar supervisor from SEEDS Restaurant & Lounge, won Myanmar’s first young sommelier competition held on 17th January.
The competition is organized by the Chaine des Rotisseurs, an international association of gastronomy established in over 80 countries, with nearly 25000 members worldwide. Mr. Nyan Htet Naing started as a junior at SEEDS when he was only 17 years old and that’s when he discovered his interest and passion for wines and spirits. Since then, he’s been researching and probing about wine creations and has been seeking opportunities to utilize those while he’s at duty.
“When I saw that the Chaine des Rotisseurs offered a 1-year-sommelier education program, I immediately applied.” said the young man who also ran second at the First Riedel Sommelier Trophy during the International Wine Fair in Yangon in October 2019.
He became more familiar with the concept of sommelier when the owners of SEEDS sent him to Switzerland to the International Bartender School, where he got to visit wineries. He loves co-selling together with his trainer as well as the owner of SEEDS, Ms. Lucia Eppisser, who also was a highly awarded Swiss sommelier.
“Winning this prestigious and challenging competition is a great honour for me and a motivation to build up more knowledge and skills to share with my Burmese fellows.” said Mr. Nyan Htet Naing, who is always willing to find and learn new opportunities and chances to polish his knowledge and proficiency in mixologist as well as sommelier- since it’s all about flavours, creativity and work with passion.
