As a part of developing the tourism industry, the government is planning to implement a direct air link between Bagan and Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Bagan, Myanmar is known as one of the ancient cities in the country and it has been listed as a UNESCO World’s Heritage Site on July 2019. The connected airport to Bagan, Nyaung U airport is currently operating to half a dozen destinations all located inside Myanmar.  Presently, a total of five domestic carriers fly to Bagan daily. However, many international airlines were interested to be able to link the most famous archaeological and religious site of Myanmar.

At the meeting recently held by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, U Henry Van Thio – Vice President of Myanmar and Chairman of the National Tourism Development Central Committee – claimed that the purpose of this initial scheme is a part of arranging northern tourism package tours between ASEAN countries, enhancing the important tourist attraction sites in Buddhist countries.

He also mentioned that Myanmar and Cambodia has signed an agreement to promote Angkor – Bagan, Two Ancient Capitals – One Destination tour in November, 2017. Then the equipment and services at the Mandalay International Airport were upgraded to be able to handle International flights.

As per U Henry Van Thio during his visit to Cambodia in November, Mr. Samdech Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, has mentioned the same implement for a direct air link between the famous Bagan and Siem Reap.

Once it’s established, not only the tourism industry will be more developed but also it can enhance a friendly relationship between the two nations.
