The first ever ‘Ancient Bagan Bazaar’ will take place 29 November through 1 December at Thante Nyaung U Hotel. During the three-day event, local artisans and social enterprises will be showcasing their handmade products alongside food stalls selling traditional snacks.

For the founder of the event, Daw Khine Zar Ko Gyi, this is dream come true. ‘For years, I have been thinking of different ideas to promote Bagan as more than just a historic destination. Something that will make people think ‘Bagan is alive with events and activities for the public to enjoy’. So, I started asking friends for ideas and input and the result is the Ancient Bagan Bazaar’.

More than 25 artisans and small business owners have purchased vending space for the event. Their booths will sell handmade items such as lacquerware, textiles and clothing from local cotton, sand paintings and more. A photo exhibit entitled ‘Bagan in our Heart’, food stalls from the Myanmar Chef Association and educational activities will round out the event. In addition to the main aim of promoting Myanmar traditional crafts and encouraging creativity, Ma Khine also hopes that Ancient Bagan Bazaar will bring new opportunities for small businesses. ‘The Bazaar is a great chance for talented artisans to connect with new customers and potentially build a broader business network for their future.

At the very least, locals in the Bagan region will gain a better awareness of the quality products available on the market.’ The reaction from community has been positive thus far, even though there has been little publicity. But as the event draws closer, more advertising and promotion will be done around Bagan in order to raise awareness and excite attendees. And, as the Ancient Bagan Bazaar falls during the peak tourist season, Ma Khine hopes that visitors from abroad will attend. ‘I want the world to know that we (Myanmar) have high quality products’, she adds.
