The Northern BBQ: Defining Northern Shan Food in Yangon

Ethnic food restaurants are growing presence in Yangon. The latest installment to Urban Asia’s huge restaurant pool is The Northern BBQ with a promise to offer a dining experience straight from the chilly mountains of Northern Shan State; the high altitude and cool climate calls for a spicy yet rich flavour in most of their dishes.

The menu is divided into a Yunnan-style BBQ and other a la carte dishes such as Malar Hin, a derivative Shan that’s prepared with Mala Sauce. The owner Sai Leng Seng or Steven himself is from Muse and have been quite captivated by the food industry while on his trip to various countries like Australia, the USA, and Singapore.

“The food [in foreign countries] is more cultural appropriate and sometimes are totally different than the actual food. For example, Crab Rangoon. It doesn’t look like a crab dish. That’s what I want to show Yangon. What real Northern Shan State food tastes like,” says Steven, with an enthusiastic smile on his face.

Still not convinced? What better way than to try them yourself and let your taste buds decide.
