2019 MYANMORE Awards Winner – Bar of the Year – The Penthouse
It’s easy to forget the huge impact the Penthouse had on the Yangon bar and restaurant scene when they opened up all those years ago. They were among the first bars to take advantage of the roof space available in Yangon, and due to their location were able to offer the most amazing views of the city and the Shwedagon Pagoda, many consider the Penthouse view to be the best in Yangon. But there is more to The Penthouse than the views, with their consistently high-quality Mediterranean food offering, substantial wine list, excellent service and superb bar experience, you can understand why they have been so successful over the years.
In 2018 they underwent a refurbishment, moved the bar and tidied up their urban industrial chic decor, and went from a great bar into one of the best bars in the country with one of the most exciting and innovative cocktail menus in Yangon.
The Penthouse is a bar that builds its tempo as the night goes on, the transition from a relaxed chilled vibe to a high energy high volume bar is steady. By 10pm at the weekends it is usually packed out with a stylish crowd who are often treated to a set by a visiting international DJ. As the volume increases the crowd builds, and as the vibe intensifies the team behind the bar comes to life, bottles fly, glasses are twirled, and the team works like an orchestra.
This award is perhaps long overdue for The Penthouse, but they deserve it, so congratulations team, cheers to 2019!
