With an entrance that lies hidden off Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Cask 81 is an exclusive bar in Yangon like no other. After opening in 2014, Cask 81 is the first –and only – whisky bar in the city. With over 82 single malt brands, 166 single malt expressions, 10 blended whiskies from around 67 whisky distilleries, Cask 81 is the place to head for a glass of the “water of life.”

Whether you’re trying whisky for the first time or it’s your regular tipple of choice, you’ll be delighted by what you can find at Cask 81. From Tomatin, a Highland whisky, that was brewed in a sherry cask to create a creamy vanilla taste, to Ledaig, a peaty whisky from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, which has notes of sea salt, the range of whiskies available sure to surprise. As well as classic whiskies from Scotland, Cask 81 also has a wide range from elsewhere around the world. Paul John Brilliance, created in Goa, India and the South African malt Three Ships are both well-worth ordering. Book in for a Tasting Flight where you can try a selection of different whiskies and learn about how they are created, the prices start from $18.

Starting this February 1st, Cask 81 have created a new and succinct menu to accompany their whiskies that will compliment and enhance the drink in your hand. To start we tried Pacific smoked cod which was seasoned with a sprinkle of Cask 81 special herb mix and then lightly brushed with a blow torch to add a delicate charred flavour ($15).  Following the fish theme came grilled prawns served with egg and tomato ($12) and then fried chicken wings served with a selection of sauces ($12). The standout dish from the menu was grilled Australia rib-eye steak, which had been marinated in whiskey and arrived at the table on a sizzling hotplate ($25). To conclude we enjoyed a selection of cheese and relish ($10).

For the duration of February, Cask 81 will be holding a special promotion. A bottle of the 12-year Denston, normally sold for $139, and the 10-year Arran, normally priced at $133, will both now available for $99 each. As an added bonus, guests who buy two bottles will be able to purchase a third for $80.
