Yaw Min Gyi’s latest watering hole is an ideal place for sports fans to enjoy some beer and barbecue, writes Anabelle Ayma and Lou De Bruycker.

The Social House (Kitchen & Tap) – Yangon offers a motto: “Eat, drink, be social.” And that shines through, especially in the evenings.

The place is spotless and has a modern design, with fun quotes written on the walls and dream catchers hanging from the ceiling. Three TVs and a projector screen the latest sports, while the background music is fairly quiet and Western.

Inspired by German beer gardens, the owner wanted to create an open space for beer and barbecue that brings people together on the same big tables. It also offers a “big share plate” so you can taste with your friends all the different dishes on the menu.

The roomy restaurant, which has a terrace and Wi-Fi, serves a wide range of barbequed meats including deep-fried chicken wings (4,000 kyats) and thighs (3,500 kyats) which come with six dipping sauces.

Another specialty is the yakitori (skewer) chicken thigh and green onion (900 kyats) and beef with garlic butter (1,400 kyats).

The drinks menu has a diverse choice of beers on tap (from 1,500 kyats) to bottled domestics (from 2,000 kyats) and imports (from 2,500 kyats). Juices and fancy drinks (from 4,800 kyats) are on the menu plus some desserts are in the pipeline.
