The opening of Myanmar International Fashion Week by John Lwin was awash with femininity and colors at Yangon’s Shwe Htut Htin (Hexagon complex) last night.

About 300 people, including local celebrities, loyal customers of each fashion house, and fashion enthusiasts, attended the night.

Running from 8-10 December, the week comprises 13 shows with over 100 models from Yangon, Mandalay, and Taunggyi.

The first day saw four shows under the theme of traditional wear.

Opening the show was upscale silk and fashion house “Chaw Chaw,” which presented a range of looks from ready-to-wear dresses to elegant evening gowns, bridal gown, and luxury traditional dresses.

Over 40 vibrant dresses showcasing hues of pink, turquoise, gold, and yellow were shown. Local fabric house Shwe Loon Lek Pya followed with an undercurrent of femininity running through its looks, modern twists on designs of single-colored tops matching with colorful “wave pattern” longyis.

We saw the use of feather-like style, excessive top bows both on the front and back, and dresses with long tails. The final dress added sequins embroidery with a V-shaped cut top, boasting a big gold and ruby necklace and earrings with embroidered side extension.

The main colors were several shades of blue, gold, and pink.

Third on the lineup—and the only male designer of the night—Shwe Zar Chi showcased flowery numbers, patches embroidered on both tops and skirts with big bow and tail extensions. Overall, the style was quite traditional and conservative.

Young designer May Thinzar Theint closed the show, with sweet, energetic, and confident models wearing different kinds of longyi patterns matched with see-through tops, showing off their skin and adding femininity with a feather and little flowers. Silk and chiffon were mainly used to create the looks.

But on the next set, the designer surprised the audience with silk trousers and a short skirts collection.

The main colors were soft pink and purple. Models are seen wearing chiffon flowers headband with beads extension to soften the looks.

During the interval of each show, there were makeup tutorial presentations by the main sponsor “Hearty Heart” and performances by rock singers and a dance group.
