Tucked away in the Tamwe area of the city among little streets, Golden Crab is a hidden gem and it’s certainly worth the trek.
The décor has little to be desired but do not let this fool you, predominantly frequented by local costumers this restaurant serves some of the best seafood I have had in Yangon at a reasonable price.
The staff is attentive and friendly. The cuisine is Thai, thus expect a Thai approach to cooking seafood: fragrant flavours and smell. Although the restaurant is famous for its seafood they also offer a range of meat dishes.
I highly recommend you order the crab. I opted for the Curry Crab (10,000 MMK). The crab was very big, smothered in curry sauce. The curry sauce is not spicy, but it is flavourful and complements well the sweet, juicy crab meat.
I was recommended the Jungle Thin Soup (5,500 MMK small / 8,000MMK large). I could smell the lemongrass as soon as it was set on the table. As fragrant tasting as it smells, like most Thai soups with bright and sour flavour, watch out for the chunks of floating ginger!
It came with various vegetables such as small Thai eggplants which pleasantly burst in your mouth. It also came with king prawns, whose flavor might be slightly overpowered by the soup, but nonetheless make a good addition to the dish.
The Fish with Red Chilli Paste (8,000MMK), a whole fried fish, was entirely covered with a generous amount of chilli sauce. The chilli was not unbearable, and added a pleasant kick to the dish. The fish was fried perfectly, and the white meat was tender and soft and not soggy with oil.
The Shell BBQ (4,500MMK) is unmissable, and was unexpectedly one of the best dishes. Each shell is covered with a red sauce, which was slightly sweet and smoky in flavor
The little shells are perfect to scoop with your spoon and it is incredibly easy to eat an entire plate of them!
Overall, Golden Crab serves generous portions of fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced seafood. They have a vast menu which offers various versions of different seafood, so you are spoiled for choice. A must go to for seafood lovers!
