Aston Soon would never have imagined back in 2005, that his Western-style Steakhouse would cross the shores of Singapore into Yangon’s Myanmar Plaza ten years later. Located amongst a score of fast food outlets, Astons stands out with its cowboy inspired theme and energetic vibe. Their brand-new menu offers supreme sirloins and tenderloins as well as chicken chops, fish fillets and a satisfying drinks menu.

Very efficiently we were ushered to our seats and shown the menu. Like many other western cuisines, one chooses a starter (soup or salad), a main course with side options, a dessert and drink. We went straight for the mushroom soup and garlic bread; the soup was creamy, every mouthful melted with soft mushroom bits.

The main courses are prepared either as an ‘a la carte item or a set meal with two side dishes. Side dishes are in hot and cold options, including tasty rice, mac and cheese, onion rings, a range of salads and coleslaw as well as potato-based options like fries, wedges and the recommended baked potato. The meat, chicken and fish can be prepared in numerous ways that include teriyaki, black-peppered and chargrilled. We opted for the chargrilled chicken, which was cooked to perfection; it was soft and juicy on the inside, with enough spice to give it kick.

Our sides complemented the dishes with perfect harmony. For diners who might fancy Italian offerings, the menu also served spaghetti. With reasonable portions, the set meals were priced from an affordable 6,800 Ks. Beverage options include a wide selection of alcoholic options as well as soft drinks, coffee and tea.

The ambient lighting and retro-style brick wall punctuated with photos of cowboys in lasso action transported us into the wild West of America as we feasted on our meaty dishes – certainly there is an air of machismo about the place.

Indeed, our dining experience could be best summed up by its founder Aston Spoon’s recipe for success: ‘Providing quality and value-for-money food service that makes you feel like you’re with friends, and an experience that you’ll remember for life.’

There is no escaping the fact that Astons is a steak restaurant. From the retro style brick wallpaper loaded with action photographs of cowboys, to the Stetsons and horns displayed behind the bar – there is a certain machismo about the place.
