Min Lann is a Rakhine traditional seafood restaurant chain that has been a favourite amongst Yangonites since the opening of their first branch on Minn Street 17 years ago. Today, the Min Lann Restaurant continues to go from strength to strength with five branches in Yangon. The latest opening on Shin Saw Pu Street offers indoor and outdoor seating for up to 300 people with four VIP rooms.
A six-course menu, comprised entirely of high quality local seafood based dishes is available on a daily basis and costs a very reasonable USD30. The food is prepared in an open kitchen and the atmosphere is always buzzing with energy. However, if like me it’s a quiet evening and conversation with friends you’re planning the VIP rooms are ideal.
For the appetiser, we had Ngapali beach styled Grill Prawns, a fusion of Thai and Chinese flavours minus the hot chilli sauce. In my opinion, the perfect start. Moving on we tried the Fisherman’s Curry, a signature soup of Min Lann that combines freshly cooked prawns, flower crab, cattle fish and shell fish in a very satisfying way. One serving was enough for three people and went perfectly with noodles.
Continuing with our healthy choices we tried the steamed vegetables with green chilli and fish paste. If red hot chili pepper are not your thing then beware and ask them to make the sauce mild when ordering. No Asian can stray far from rice, so naturally we dived into the Seafood Fried Rice and it was so finger licking good we polished it off within five minutes. The friend rice was made with crispy prawn, flower crab, squid, fish, carrot and corn.
Finally, our dessert was a combination of traditional sweets. One stand out dish was the famous, Mont Lat Saung: A Myanmar dessert made from tear drop rice shake and liquid sugar smothered in coconut dressing.
Min Lann is a great venue for aficionados of seafood who love to dine outside. Soft drinks and beer are available by the gallon and the atmosphere is always lively and informal.
