WHAT IT IS
The Pizza Company sells Extreme Pizza. Extreme Pizza is round like a pizza, it has cheese on it like pizza – but it is not pizza. Extreme Pizza has crusts stuffed with chicken sausages; fat like baby fingers wrapped up in cheese wrapped up in bacon. That is extreme. There are six varieties of crusts to choose from. Extreme. You can order a chicken-sausage cheese-stuffed crust Vegetarian Pizza; so we do. The largest pizza franchise in Thailand – we are told – The Pizza Company officially opened their first shop in Myanmar in May. The event was attended by politicians, local stars and CEO William Heinecke himself. The Pizza Company’s set up is much like Pizza Hut; there’s a salad bar, garlic bread, chicken wings, pasta and Coca Cola. Much the same but extreme-r. These pizza-type things are filling. Massively so. They are buried thick in toppings. My colleague says she feels heavy after one slice. I concur.

ATMOSPHERE
The restaurant is large, a bit noisy is very, very clean -even the toilet. A giant painting of Venice and a wall-length mirror on the wall hangs with not a smudge of grease. Clean plastic fruits and vegetables hang above the clean salad bar. The kitchen is expansive, open and clean. There are clean forks and clean knives. The staff are friendly, efficient and clean; all wearing the same clean clothes. Teenage girls take selfies on their phones protected by pink rubber pigs in front of eroticized images of pizza and of pasta. Generic Italian instrumentals pipe through the restaurant. At the crescendo, pizza-eating attains a height of drama and of triumph typically reserved for the cinema. One loses all sense of where one is; this place could be Sydney, Tokyo or New York. Only in eating a totally unneeded after-dinner ice-cream next door at Swensen’s – their associated ice-cream franchise – do I see through the pristine windows the dirty, imperfect, fascinating world outside. We are in Yangon.

RECOMMENDED
Highly recommended when you’re craving carbohydrate, fat, or garlic bread – which of course – is fat-carbohydrate perfection. Pizza Company can easily be a caloric assault. The sausage-cheese stuffed crust Vegetarian was too extreme; but the best-selling Super Deluxe, with a cheese-stuffed crust, is a winner. The Seafood Marinara we tried was exceptional in that it was not too much; but packed with flavour, and reasonable at 4,500Ks. 5,000Ks will get you a bowl for the salad bar, which has a decent range. Between 5pm and 8pm it can quite busy, so you may have to wait up to 30 minutes.

PRICES
Expect to pay between 8,000Ks and 12,000Ks kyat each, depending on what you order, and how extreme you want to be.
