I am a South African “Jappie”- brought up on a small farm just outside Johannesburg. After studying, I stepped into the corporate world and found out it is not what I thought it would be! So I packed my bags and went to Thailand; from there Myanmar looked interesting so I came over… I never have thought I would end up managing a bar in Myanmar after studying science. I am now the new Bar Manager at 50th, and I absolutely love it.
WHY DO YOU THINK 50TH ST BAR WORKS HERE IN YANGON
It works because we are the only pub in town – and the only place – that you can have a beer and some good food while sitting in front of the bar with your eyes clued to some good sports. I think it is the pub vibe that makes people keep coming back to our bar.
BEST GIG YOU’VE EVER BEEN
Watching Linkin Park with my brother live in concert at Soccer City in Johannesburg in 2012.
WHAT DO YOU DO DURING YOUR DOWNTIME
I am a rugby nut! Weekends I play rugby at our local club called Yangon Dragons. Other than that, I love spending time with friends, whether it is at the bar or at home. I like to cook too – although I do not think I am any good – I consider it one of my great hobbies
Ladies.. hint hint!
YOUR IDEA OF A GREAT NIGHT
This is why I love my job; a perfect night out is when I have some friends at the bar and I can host them here. Have some drinks, listen to good music and hear people`s stories! Maybe sneak in a cheeky shooter somewhere along the line.
We love your job too… especially when you sneak in those cheeky shooters.. with us.
YOUR FAVOURITE CHILL-OUT PLACE IN THE WORLD
My paradise is Cape McClear in Monkey Bay. It is in the southern tip of Lake Malawi in Africa. I think it should be on everyone’s bucket list.
IF YOU CAN INVITE ANYONE, DEAD OR ALIVE, TO 50TH ST, WHO WOULD IT BE, AND WHAT WOULD YOU SERVE
Isaac Newton. I will serve him an apple martini (no pun intended)
