Afternoon Teas in Yangon
Yangon has seen an explosion of afternoon teas on offer these last few months. So if you’re like me and long for a cup of real English tea you’ll be pleased to know you can satisfy your cravings at a number of different venues around the city.
My personal favourite is undoubtedly Acacia tea salon. It’s the nicest place in town for those harbouring a sweet tooth, it’s beautiful fresh decor fusing dark wood floors with fresh leaf green cushions and blue & white Chinese porcelain creates a wonderful haven to restore your energy before braving the blazing sun of the city once again.
They also have a very good lunch & dinner menu but it tends to be on the pricey side.
I highly recommend the cassis dome, it’s out of this world.
They offer afternoon tea menu for 12,000 for a small portion and 18,000 for a large portion, I shared a small between 2 people and it was plenty. It includes a pot of tea of your choice a couple of sandwiches, a quiche, burger, cheesy scones, as well as pastries, tartlets, chocolatey moosey things, cheesecake, all served in adorable miniature sizes. Considering the quantity and location it’s great value!
The Strand boast a hugely elaborate tea; they not only offer a Classic tea, but you could also opt for a Myanmar tea if that tickles your fancy. To be transported back to the colonial period opt for their Classic Tea which includes; sandwiches, chicken brioche, spiced smoked butterfish, pastries, tartlets, chocolate torte, lemon meringue pie, jasmin jellies and ice-cream. Those who want to experience some of the local cuisine could opt for the Myanmar tea, including: crispy flour cakes, fried vegetables, tea leaf salad, banana pudding, sago, semolina cake, dumplings to name but a few. Both $17, daily.
For a beautiful lakeside setting, although it’s a little further outside town Inya Lake Hotel also put on an afternoon tea. Much like Acacia, you’ll receive a tiered stand of goodies bearing sandwiches, mini cakes, fruit and pastries. $10 daily from 2-5pm.
If you’re downtown and feeling peckish Traders offer high tea in the lobby. I’ve seen many a tiered stand replete with an assortment of cakes and pastries come by. Available from 2.30-5.30pm.
