This week is an exciting one in the Yangon calendar, with Chinese New Year celebrations animating China Town, creating a hub of noise and excitement! Lots of other exciting cool stuff on too.

Thursday 7th of February

If you haven’t already gone to check out the photography exhibition on Skateboarders of Yangon and Youth of Yangon which is a poignant documentary about Skateboarding in Myanmar do make sure you get down there. It’s in this beautiful semi-dilapidated colonial building, which is worth visiting in itself. Some of the featured skateboarders will be there each night. The instigators of the event have created a really cool vibe, there’s icy cold beer, and punch made by the skateboarders. It makes for a great evening and something a little different to the norm. On till the 11th, screening of the documentary at 7.30pm each night.

“THE RENDEZVOUS” South East Asian Urban Art Event is an urban art event that will project direct reflection of the South East Asian society. It is the collective art show for South East Asian emerging artists. Expect a collision of where one might imagine graffiti to meet hip-hop. On till the 9th.

First Thursday of the month 50th Street are putting on a Quiz Night, participate to exercise your general knowledge.

If you haven’t already heard about it, PARKROYAL are doing a Lunar New Year promotion of Yee Sang with scallops, salmon and sea bass till the end of the month.

Yearning for a quintessential English Afternoon Tea? Inya Lake Hotel can help stub some of that nostalgia. Between 2-5pm every day you can sit back and sip on English tea whilst gorging on cakes, sandwiches and pastries. You might just forget you’re not in England on a perfect summer’s day.

Thursday’s come around again bringing with it Inya 1 Cocktail Happy Hour.


Friday 8th

For all the American Center members Public Speaking club has invited the author Dr. Khin Maung Nyo, to give a speech on the importance of Public Speaking : Public Figures, How to make a Persuasive Speech. At 3-5pm.

A two-day extravaganza including acting, comedy, dancing and singing is about to ensue, Hnin Si Kha Yee Thae A Nyeint has been happening every year since 2005, this year the theme is Rose the Traveller. This is a massive event with an estimated 10,000 people attending the performances.

Recurring Events:

One of the best kept secrets of Yangon is the Yacht club on a Friday night; it opens its doors to non-members, so all are welcome to spend their evening enjoying the breeze running off the lake listening to the dulcet sound of the water lapping up against the shore.

Escape the heat by going to Aqua gym first thing on a Friday morning.

Go to The Strand for undoubtedly the classiest happy hour in town.



Saturday  9th

Tin Zar Maw the Myanmar vocalist is on her Duet Tour and they’re coming to Yangon this Saturday to perform at the National Theatre.

If you didn’t make it to Hnin Si Kha Yee Thae A Nyeint on Friday, don’t miss out, it’s the final day of this all singing all dancing spectacular.

There’s a 5 day music concert and funfair taking places in Kandawgyi Park, it’s free admission and some big Burmese names are playing, so it should be worth a visit.

Adult ballet lessons are starting-up, all levels are welcome but it’s geared towards beginners.

And of course The Hash running group will be out once again burning off those Shan noodles! Everyone welcome.


Sunday 10th

Sunday marks the Chinese New Year, so welcome in Year of the Black Snake. With dragon dances to the sound of drums and cymbals, China town will no doubt be ablast with colour and sound.

There’s a Pre-Valentine’s Day Party at Cloud 9, sounds like it could be a fun afternoon if you check it out.

The International Culture and Charity Group are putting on a Charity Dinner and Inle Silk Fashion Show at Traders in aid of children with cleft palates.



Monday 11th

Start the week on a healthy note by going to a morning yoga class.

50th Street has started up a 2-4-1 Pasta night on a Monday.

For the month of February PARKROYAL Yangon are offering Hamachi which is Yellow Tail fish at their Japanese buffet dinner,  so if you fancy treating yourself there’s a delicious dinner to be had there.


Tuesday 12th

Yangon Photo festival begins hosting conferences and screenings; there is a brilliant line up of things on over the next 4 days.

Awaken and unleash your inner Latino dancer at 50th Street’s Salsa night. 

Pansodan Gallery is the place to go if you fancy socialising but aren’t willing to inflict anyone with your salsa moves.

For some steak and wine 50th Street ’s your place.


Wednesday 13th

Opening day of the Yangon Photo Festival exhibitions. The theme is the French motto “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity). It’s sure to be a fascinating and insightful exhibition.

Public Speaking Club will be discussing ‘What kind of person you are?’ this week.

Extended Happy Hour and pizza alongside live music at 50th Street.
